Background

One of the most critical aspects of "We Are The W" is how it tells the athletes' stories and the sense of community and sisterhood among WNBA players. The film doesn't just focus on the women's athletic achievements, but instead shifts attention to their struggles and triumphs in making a name for themselves as professional athletes. The film reveals that WNBA players are not just athletes but also daughters, sisters, scholars, pioneers, trendsetters, leaders, activists, survivors, and much more.

Telling diverse stories of the women of the WNBA is crucial in inspiring the next generation of female athletes, who might not otherwise see themselves reflected in sports. While "We Are The W" features athletes from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives, ultimately, they are just three stories of the Black women who make up 80% of the 144 WNBA players. Through this project, diversity is reflected not just in the players who star in the piece but also in the directors and production crew — who almost entirely identified as either female, a person of color, or LGBTQ+— a rarity in sports productions today, which highlights a much-needed change in the industry.
